SD10 Bus Transportation Procedures and Code of Conduct

Bus Passenger Code of Conduct

School District No. 10 (Arrow Lakes) expects all pupils utilizing school bus transportation services to follow the Bus Passenger Code of Conduct. The Bus Passenger Code of Conduct is established to ensure a safe ride, free from harassment, violence, or intimidation for all passengers riding the buses. Students and parents/guardians are reminded that misbehavior on the bus may distract the bus driver and affect the safe operation of the school bus. The driver’s main focus must be on traffic and the road ahead. Bus passengers are responsible for controlling their own behavior on the bus.

1. Students must follow instructions of the bus drivers. Misbehaviour on school buses may be reported to the principal and such misbehaviour could result in suspension of riding privileges.

2. School buses are an extension of the school and students will be responsible to their school principal for discipline as if they were in a school building.

3. Passenger conduct must be orderly at all times so as to provide a safe environment.

4. Accordingly, the following rules will be strictly enforced:

a. There is to be no moving around on the buses while in motion. Students are to remain in their seats until the bus comes to a complete stop.

b. Students shall take seats assigned to them by the bus driver when asked to do so.

c. Students are not to put their heads or arms out of open window.

d. Eating of lunches or other articles of food on the bus shall be at the discretion of the bus driver.

e. Students are to refrain from throwing articles and must not drop or leave garbage, paper, or any other refuse on the bus.

f. While talking among students is permitted, there is to be no undue noise, particularly at railway crossings and intersections.

g. Profanity will not be permitted.

h. There will be no smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, lighters or matches on school buses.

i. There will be no alcohol, illegal drugs or weapons of any kind on school buses.

5. Students must line up for the bus as instructed by the driver or school personnel, prior to boarding the bus. Pushing or shoving will not be permitted. The bus should be at a full stop before students step up to load.

6. Students will be picked up or let off at designated school bus stops ONLY. Students must provide permission note (signed by parent/guardian) to change your bus stop-for visits to friends, birthday parties, work, etc.

7. Students crossing the road must do so at a safe distance in front of the bus while the loading lights are operating following the safe crossing procedures.

8. Any intentional or negligent act of a student that destroys or damages property of the School Board, that student and that student’s parents are jointly and severally liable to the Board in respect of the act of that student.

9. Students are not to play with emergency exits or equipment.

Note: video surveillance cameras are used on all District buses to help ensure safety, order, and discipline to prevent vandalism.

All incidents of misbehavior on school busses will be reported in writing by the bus driver to the School Principal who will notify parents/guardian.

For more serious behavioral issues, or for students who have repeated disciplinary actions, the student may receive:

Suspension from school bus riding privileges for 1 to 3 days
Suspension from school bus riding privileges lasting 1-5 days
Indefinite school bus riding suspension until a meeting is held with the student, their parent(s), school administration and a transportation representative.
All suspensions from riding privileges includes riding to or from extra-curricular activities

Please be advised that in the spring of 2004 the School Board approved the installation of video surveillance cameras on District buses to help ensure safety, order, and discipline to prevent vandalism.

School Bus Behavior Report

Bus drivers shall report all cases requiring disciplinary action to the Manager of Operations and Transportation, and School Principal on a form provided to the bus drivers for such purpose. See below, the School Bus Behavior Report which identifies behavior that will result in a discipline ticket and possible suspension of privileges. Please note that bus ridership is a privilege and not a right.
